Rivers underground, forests above

The underground river, Phong Nha Cave

Phong Nha means "Wind and Teeth" — a name for the stalagmites that once stood at the cave's mouth. People have used this cave for far longer than anyone's kept records: a Cham altar and inscriptions still sit on its walls, undeciphered, left by a civilization that worshipped here long before Vietnam controlled this stretch of coast. Local legend holds that Emperor Hàm Nghi hid royal treasure inside it in 1885, fleeing French forces at the start of the Cần Vương resistance. During the war against the Americans, the cave did a similar job again — requisitioned as a field hospital and ammunition store, protected by rock the bombs couldn't reach.

None of that prepared anyone for what was still undiscovered. In 1990, a local man named Hồ Khanh sheltered from a storm at the mouth of a cave he then lost track of for eighteen years. When he found it again in 2008 and led a British caving team in, they confirmed in April 2009 what the jungle had been hiding: Sơn Đoòng, the largest cave passage on Earth — large enough in places to fit a 40-story skyscraper, with a collapsed section of ceiling that lets in enough light to grow its own patch of forest underground.

The whole karst system beneath it — limestone roughly 400 million years old, among the oldest in Asia — became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. In 2025 the listing was extended again, joined across the border with Laos's Hin Nam No National Park into a single transboundary site: proof that whatever's underground here doesn't recognize the lines drawn on top of it.

April–August — dry, and the only window the deep cave systems, including Sơn Đoòng, are open at all. September–March brings heavy rain that floods the cave entrances and shuts expeditions down completely; this isn't a lesser season, it's a closed one.

Đồng Hới Airport (VDH), about 45 km / roughly 1 hour by road to Phong Nha town. Domestic connections to Hà Nội and Sài Gòn; no direct international service.
