Hà Nội
Hà Nội Museums & Heritage Trail
A walking route through the Vietnam National Museum of History, the Temple of Literature, Hỏa Lò Prison and Thăng Long Imperial Citadel — Hà Nội's history in one morning, snacks included.
This walk starts at the Vietnam National Museum of History, whose collection runs from Đông Sơn bronze drums through the dynasties to the twentieth century — a useful primer before the rest of the day makes more sense in context. From there it's a short walk to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university, built to train mandarins under the Confucian exam system that shaped the country's governance for centuries. Hỏa Lò Prison is the turn in register — built by the French colonial government to hold Vietnamese political prisoners, later used to hold American POWs during the war. The exhibits don't flinch from either period. The walk ends at Thăng Long Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the seat of Vietnamese royal power for over a thousand years, its excavated layers revealing dynasties stacked on top of each other. Local snacks are worked in along the route rather than saved for a sit-down lunch — a practical way to keep a history-dense morning from feeling like a lecture.
