Why we love it
The same limestone seen three ways: from a rowed boat in Tràng An, from the top of nearly 500 steps at Hang Múa, and from the courtyards of Hoa Lư, the capital these cliffs once defended.

Ninh Bình Day Trip: Tràng An, Hang Múa & Hoa Lư
A rowed boat through the Tràng An caves, nearly 500 steps up Hang Múa, and the 10th-century capital at Hoa Lư — one full day from Hà Nội.
The day starts with the drive south from Hà Nội, about two hours after a hotel pick-up, to Hoa Lư. It was the capital of Đại Cồ Việt from 968 to 1010, when a ring of limestone cliffs did the work city walls usually do. The temples honour the Đinh and Lê kings, and the courtyards are mossy and old. After lunch, a rowed boat takes you through Tràng An, a UNESCO site listed for nature and culture together. It's two hours of calm water, caves, rice fields and cliffs. The last stop is Hang Múa: nearly 500 steps up to the Lying Dragon viewpoint, with the Tam Cốc valley laid out below. Then the two-hour drive back to Hà Nội.
